Legendary hard-rock band Van Halen has postponed 31 upcoming dates on their much-anticipated reunion tour. US Congress has rejected an amendment that would have brought an end to the war in Afghanistan. This despite new figures that show a mere 27 percent of Americans are in favor of the war effort. Opponents of the amendment say that despite waning public support, an early withdrawal would compromise US security in the long run.

The April fundraising tally is out, and the Obama re-election campaign along with Democratic party managed to raise a hefty 43.6 million dollars. This makes the president’s team well on its way to surpass the $750 million raised in 2008. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney’s campaign pulled in a healthy $40 million in funds last month – over three times the amount raised in March.

For the first time in US history, non-Hispanic white births are NOT the majority! According to the US Census, Black, Hispanic, Asian and mixed-race births made up 50.4 percent of all bundles of joy delivered in the year ending July 2011. That’s a significant increase – in 1990, non-white births accounted for just 37 percent of new arrivals.

The Chicago statue named “Marilyn Forever” turned out to be anything but. The 26-foot statue of Marilyn Monroe – in her iconic pose of her dress blowing up – has been torn down. A study from Xavier University in Cincinnati Ohio has concluded that a third of Americans would fail the US citizenship test. Researchers asked more than a thousand people 10 random questions from the quiz, examples being “We Elect A President For How Many Years?” and “What Is The Highest Court In the United States?” Thirty-five percent of those tested couldn’t answer five of the ten questions correctly.

US President Barack Obama says that he supports gay marriage – though he was forced to make the announcement a little sooner than he would have liked. On Wednesday, Obama told ABC that he would have officially gone public with his position at the Democratic National Convention in September. A second male masseur has filed suit against John Travolta, claiming sexual misconduct. The unnamed Georgia man repeated the claims of the first masseur, saying the A-list actor tried to initiate sex with him during a private appointment back in January. In North Carolina, a controversial constitutional amendment has passed that effectively BANS same-sex marriage and civil unions! Gay marriage was already illegal in the state, but this amendment cements the ruling firmly in the state’s constitution. Roughly 61 percent of the voters cast ballots in favor of the ban. It’s a blow to same-sex couples, as it voids all other forms of civil unions and domestic partnerships.

The longest serving republican senator, Dick Lugar from Indiana, has been defeated in a heated Republican primary. After 36 years in office, Lugar finally met his match with Tea Party candidate Richard Mourdock. Mourdock captured a decisive 61 percent of the vote. He spent much of his campaign pushing for change, all while accusing the incumbent of being too left leaning on key issues.
